Federated Learning
A machine learning approach where models are trained across multiple decentralized devices or servers holding local data, without exchanging raw data, enabling personalization while keeping user data on their own devices.
Federated learning trains a shared model by sending the model to where the data lives rather than centralizing the data. Each participating device or server trains the model on its local data and sends only model updates, not raw data, back to a central server that aggregates updates from many participants to improve the global model.
For growth teams, federated learning opens personalization possibilities that would otherwise be blocked by privacy constraints. On-device personalization models can learn from user behavior without that behavior data ever leaving the device, satisfying privacy regulations and user expectations while still delivering personalized experiences. AI applications include on-device keyboard predictions, personalized app recommendations, and privacy-preserving cross-company modeling. Growth engineers should evaluate federated learning for use cases where data sensitivity prevents centralization, such as health data, financial information, or any context where users expect data to stay on their device. The key technical challenges include handling non-identically distributed data across devices, managing communication efficiency with potentially millions of participants, and ensuring model convergence despite heterogeneous data. Federated learning is not a universal solution but a powerful option when privacy constraints are a primary concern.
